In the Midst of Life, We Are in Death

Today, I toured the underground crypt of Center Church.  Follow me inside, if ye dare...
(I was wondering where one goes to get a sign that reads "TO THE CRYPT."  Do you have to pay extra for that cutesy Edwardian hand pointing you in the right direction?) Today, a few friends and I toured the crypt beneath Center Church in downtown New Haven.  The building that stands today is the fourth such structure built by the church.  They needed to expand and wanted to place their new building directly in the center of the village green, but there was one problem. That is where they had buried their ancestors. Not being the type of people to disturb their own dead, they decided to build on top of them.  So in 1813, they completed this pleasant-looking church.  Unless you knew better, you'd never know there was a cemetery in the basement.
(In fact, the church estimates that there are up to 5,000 people buried beneath the sod of the village green, where people today jog, walk, and eat lunch.) There are 139 limestone grave-markers down there.  Here are a few.
